Eosin Y is a xanthogen dye used for differential staining of connective tissue and cytoplasm. In histopathology, it is used as a regaining agent after hematoxylin and before methylene blue. It is also used as a background stain in contrast to a nuclear stain. Eosin Y disodium salt has been used to determine sperm motility. The swollen and stained sperm is thought to have died. In the corneal epithelium, it has been used in the process of immunostaining.
